Baptisms (Christening)

Firstly, congratulations on the birth of your baby and we are delighted that you are interested in bringing your child to

St. Nicholas Church for baptism.

Of course, older children are also very welcome to come for baptism.

Baptisms take place here on a Sunday morning at 11:30 am after our main morning service, but they can also take place during our morning service at 9:30 am. They are generally held on the 2nd and 4th Sundays in the month.

To arrange a baptism please call Gail in the Church Office, on Bow Street (01287 632131) Monday – Friday 9.30am – 12.30pm (except Wednesdays) and she will be happy to advise you of the process.

Some frequently asked questions

Who can be a godparent?

It’s usual to ask a relative or close friend who will have the interests of your child at heart. They MUST be baptised themselves, either in the Church of England, the Roman Catholic Church or the Methodist Church.

The Godparents have to be prepared to stand alongside you and promise to help you bring up your child to know the Christian faith and to encourage their godchild in the faith.

How many godparents can I have?

The maximum number is four and a combination of men and women – at least one man and one woman.

How old must the godparents be?

Ideally, they should have reached the age of 16 years.
